Clayoquot Biosphere Trust (CBT) and Ucluelet Secondary School (USS) are pleased to announce the winners of the USS kayak raffle. Alexandra Meier of Switzerland has won the grand prize of a custom build Seaward kayak. The second prize of a $250 giftcard to Mountain Equipment Co-op has been awarded to Markus Jokinen from Whistler, BC.

Alexandra is not sure how she will travel back to Canada to claim the prize. She just arrived back in Switzerland last week and was thrilled to hear that she had won the kayak. Rebecca Hurwitz, CBT managing director, has suggested that she consider donating the boat to the USS class. “Seaward would be happy to paint the boat in the color of the Swiss flag honor of her donation,” said Hurwitz.

The raffle was a collaboration between USS and the CBT with generous support from Seaward Kayaks and Mountain Equipment Co-op. A limited number of tickets were sold locally and a MEC events outside of the region with all proceeds go directly to the USS Kayaking Program.

“We also offer a big round of applause to all of the local businesses that helped us with ticket sales including Tofino Sea Kayaking, Remote Passages, Blackrock and Majestic Sea Kayaking,” added Hurwitz.

USS staff is in the process of selecting this year’s kayaking students who will begin the class in January with Ucluelet-based instructor JF Marleau.
