As a community foundation, the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust (CBT) provides funding for many of the education, conservation, cultural and scientific projects that take place in Clayoquot Sound. If you have a project idea and are seeking financial support, this page is for you.

Funding Guidelines

Who we fund…
The Clayoquot Biosphere Trust is a federally-registered charity. This status comes with stringent guidelines as to how we can distribute funds to organizations and communities. Canada Revenue Agency determines the types of organizations – known as “qualified donees” – that can receive funding from a federally-registered charity.

These include, but are not limited to:
• registered charities,
• municipalities in Canada,
• First Nations that may be considered a public body performing a function of government,
• educational institutions, and
• the Government of Canada or a provincial or territorial government.

The complete information is available on Canada Revenue Agency’s website. Local sports teams, for example, do not meet the eligibility requirements under Canada Revenue Agency legislation.

The CBT is not able to provide funding to ineligible groups via a flow-through arrangement with qualified donees.

Please contact CBT staff if you have any questions about project funding.

Projects are evaluated using the following criteria:
• locally-based proponents and activities,
• matching resources (money and/or in-kind contributions),
• respect for local protocols,
• development of local capacity,
• communication of results locally,
• relation to the CBT’s core priorities of Youth in the Biosphere and Healthy Food, Healthy Communities, and
• support for the spirit and intent of the Biosphere Reserve designation.

We do not fund:
• capital acquisitions (e.g., computers, office furniture, lumber, etc.),
• core activities for the operation of organizations,
• sports activities,
• multi-year projects, and
• individuals or for-profit organizations.

Please note: We will not consider funding requests if reports on any previous grants are overdue.

Call for Projects

The 2012 Call for Projects is now closed.  Our Advisory Committees are currently reviewing applications.  Awards will be announced by April 15, 2012.

Advisory Committee Discretionary Funding

The CBT has five volunteer Advisory Committees — Marine & Aquatic, Terrestrial, Education, Community Development and Culture. Each Advisory Committee comprises 12 to 15 volunteers from around the region with interest or expertise in that particular field.

Each committee has an annual discretionary budget of $8,000, which is used to fund small projects throughout the region. Most of the committees accept requests for funding on an ongoing basis. The groups generally meet 2 to 5 times per year and review requests at these meetings. Proponents are strongly encouraged to attend a committee meeting to present their request and to answer any questions from the committee members.

Please download the discretionary funding application form here. We suggest you contact staff prior to completing your application to ensure that discretionary funding is still available for the calendar year. Please allow up to eight weeks for your request to be processed.

Event Sponsorship

Event Sponsorship is provided to public, non-political events in the Biosphere Region that are consistent with the CBT’s goals and objectives. The CBT allocates $10,000 annually to support the following events: Aboriginal Days, Ukee Days, the Westcoast Maritime Festival, the PRAS Arts Festival and the Whale Festival at a level of $2,000 per event.

CBT-Genus Capital Management Scholarships

The CBT and Genus Capital Management are pleased to award two scholarships annually. Each award is valued at $3000 per year for a maximum of four years.

A scholarship is available to a Ucluelet Secondary School (USS) student pursuing post-secondary education. This scholarship is adjudicated by the USS Scholarship Committee and applications can be made through the school’s regular scholarship application process.

Another scholarship is awarded annually to a Central Region Nuu-chah-nulth student. To have your application considered, you must be a member of the Hesquiaht, Ahousaht, Tla-o-qui-aht, Ucluelet or Toquaht First Nation and you must graduate from secondary school in June, 2012.

The awarding of the scholarships will be based on a combination of:
• academic achievement on Grade 12 provincial exams,
• citizenship (e.g., involvement in your community), and
• three letters of reference supporting your scholarship application.

Download the application form here.

Application deadline:
March 31, 2012 4:30 p.m.

Reporting to the CBT
The CBT wants to hear about your project – what you have achieved, what you learnt and what you suggest to others who are delivering programs in our region.

Final reports are typically due within a year of when you receive your funding. The exact date is noted on your Grant Information Sheet. We also ask that you forward two photos for use in various publications, as well as on our website, so people can see the great work we are doing together.

You can download the reporting form here. Please don’t hesitate to contact staff with any questions or concerns about your project. We want you to be successful!

The CBT suggests that you share the results of your project with the communities through public presentations and you may be invited to do so at a CBT event.

Recognizing the CBT
As part of the terms of your grant agreement, all funding recipients are asked to acknowledge CBT support in publicity and marketing materials. This can consist of including our logo on event posters and brochures, mentions in news releases and shout outs on social media. This acknowledgment raises awareness of the role of philanthropy in our region. By acknowledging the CBT, we hope to encourage more philanthropy and, in turn, generate more support and more funds for future projects.
