Food issues are important to our community members.
Whether it’s simply to quench our hunger or to help celebrate an important event – healthy, nutritious and delicious food plays an important role in every day of our lives.
The CBT is a proud supporter of the Grade School Gourmets program at Wickaninnish Community School. Check out the fun video above and get inspired: Bobby Lax and the Grade School Gourmets from StrongHeart Productions on Vimeo.
Our communities face a unique set of challenges related to food. Due to a variety of factors – including remoteness, challenging growing conditions and limited availability of options – our residents are always looking for ways to improve access to healthy, affordable, local foods.
The CBT’s Healthy Food, Healthy Communities program is based on the knowledge that affordable access to healthy food is the first step in fostering a healthy community. We are helping vulnerable individuals and communities in the Biosphere Reserve region develop an effective, community-based response to food challenges and increase our understanding of healthy, affordable food choices.
Since 2009, we have:
- Developed the West_Coast_Garden_Guide, a month-by-month intro to food gardening in our region;
- Sponsored healthy cooking classes for all ages throughout the region;
- Hosted public workshops in Tofino and Ittatsoo with experts in food security, nutrition, traditional Nuu-chah-nulth diets, non-timber forest products and wild food harvesting;
- Identified food issues throughout the area with a Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Region Food Survey;
- Helped develop a regional food network;
- Identified opportunities and issues related to food in the remote community of Hesquiaht First Nation with a community-based consultation; and
- Created a regional Food Action Plan.
