UNESCO Nomination
In January 1999, the communities of the Clayoquot Sound region, in partnership with federal and provincial governments, officially applied to UNESCO through the Canadian Commission for UNESCO to nominate Clayoquot Sound as BC’s first World Biosphere Reserve.
UNESCO Declaration
In January 2000, Clayoquot Sound was designated for inclusion in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Ahousaht Community Needs Assessment 2005
In October 2005, the Ahousaht Cultural Youth Centre Society conducted a Community Needs Assessment, which focused on the West Coast community of Ahousaht. The purpose of the Community Needs Asessment was to review the needs for services in the area of youth and families.Community Organization Directory
The purpose of the Director was to provide a comprehensive database of all the community groups and non-profit organizations within the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Region. This booklet has not been updated recently.2003 Westcoast Community Needs Assessment
In July 2003, the Westcoast Womens Resources Society conducted this Community Needs ASsessment, funded by the CBT. It focused on the West Coast communities of Vancouver Island: Hot Springs Cove, Ahousaht, Tofino, Esowista, Opitsaht, Ucluelet and Ittatsoo. The purpose was to evaluate access to existing services, as well as unmet needs and gaps in services in the area.2003 Clayoquot Symposium Proceedings
The Clayoquot Symposium 2003: Citizen Science and Community Health was held in Tofino, BC from November 25-28, 2003. The theme was health across the water, which was explored over four days of discussions between community members and invited guests.
1995 Clayoquot Sound Scientific Panel Recommendations
To review forest practices standards and ensure that forest stewardship stood up to world scrutiny, the provincial government set up an independent Scientific Panel for Sustainable Forest Practices in Clayoquot Sound in 1993. The panel, which included First Nations resource management experts and leading scientists, made its final recommendations to government in 1995. The provincial government accepted the panel’s recommendations and has fully implemented them.
