As a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve, Clayoquot Sound is subject to periodic reviews. Canadian Man and the Biosphere Programme (Canada MAB) designates a set of reviewers, generally academics well-versed in Biosphere Reserves, to visit and perform periodic reviews on each Biosphere. Biospheres undergo their first periodic reviews 10 years from their date of designation, and subsequent reviews every 10 years afterwards.
In 2010, Clayoquot Sound underwent its first review as a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve. A group of four reviewers visited Clayoquot Sound and interviewed stakeholders throughout the region. They analyzed research and statistics, and put together a review based on their findings and the UNESCO guidelines for periodic reviews.
