CBT’s Conservation Partnership Coordinator, Janessa Dornstauder, attended the Canadian Biosphere Regions Association National Gathering earlier this month (November 2023). The 19 Canadian Biosphere Regions gather once or twice per year to support each other in the collective work and strengthen relationships between areas. This year’s gathering was hosted by the Charlevoix Biosphere in the stunning community of Baie Saint-Paul.
Gathering together within a Biosphere Region sets the stage to discuss important topics impacting all Biosphere Regions across Canada. Currently, each region is working with Environment and Climate Change Canada on restoring, protecting, and conserving 30% of land and water by 2030. This project has built the internal capacity of the network and sites as leaders in protecting the environment and celebrating biodiversity.
After 3 full conference days, participants embarked on a field trip exploring the core protected areas within the Charlevoix Biosphere. What a great way to cement the importance of our collective work!
We look forward to being able to gather again with the National Network, but in the meantime, we're excited to be planning for a more local Biosphere Gathering in February. This event will provide the opportunity to connect with the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region and the Átl'ḵa7tsem/Howe Sound Biosphere Region—the other two Biosphere Regions in British Columbia. During the gathering, we aim to learn about their ongoing projects and keep fostering meaningful relationships.
