Biosphere Centre: moving forward on the land in a good way
On June 2nd, the CBT board, staff, and partners gathered at the future site of the Clayoquot Biosphere Centre for a small ceremony led by Tla-o-qui-aht cultural workers Chris and Hayden Seitcher. The intentions were simple yet profound: to reflect with gratitude on the work done to bring the Biosphere Centre initiative where it is today and to envision the next phase of the project.
The last time we gathered in this way was in March 2020, at which time Chris and Hayden led a cleansing ceremony to prepare the land for the work that lay ahead— the rezoning of the land for the purpose of the Biosphere Centre. The work included numerous community design sessions, open houses, a public hearing, and four separate readings by the District of Tofino Council. The council unanimously approved the rezoning in April and we're thrilled to be moving into the next phases of the project.
The next steps include more detailed design, collaboration with public sector funders, and the development of a capital campaign. To learn more about the biosphere centre project and how you can get involved, please reach out to Rebecca Hurwitz.
