Living Building Challenge

CBT has committed to achieving the Living Building Challenge! LBC provides a sustainable framework for the design and construction of buildings and cultivates a symbiotic relationship between people, communities, and nature. Living Buildings are innovative, regenerative, and an inspiring movement in sustainable development.

The Living Building Challenge is a sustainable building framework that aligns with CBT's values and vision: living sustainably in a healthy ecosystem with a diversified economy and strong, vibrant, and united cultures.

CBT was drawn to LBC because of its holistic integration of people and place. LBC will challenge the CBT to consider all aspects of sustainability in the new centre -- cultural, social, environmental, and economic.

The soon-to-be-built Biosphere Centre will be guided by the Living Building criteria and has the potential to reframe what's possible in this region for sustainable buildings. Building the Biosphere Centre as a Living Building will drive higher performance levels in green buildings and inspire innovation globally among the UNESCO-designated Biosphere Regions.

Living Buildings engage users with the building and connect people to culture and art with maximum beauty. They generate their energy with renewable resources and capture and treat all their water, creating net positive benefits for the climate and communities.

Living Buildings are:

•Regenerative buildings that connect occupants to light, air, food, nature, and community.
•Self-sufficient and holistic.
•Create positive impacts on human and natural systems.
•Based on 7 core performance areas called 'Petals'; Place, Water, Energy, Materials, Health and Happiness, Equity, and Beauty.

The Living Building Challenge defines today's most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment and pulls together the most progressive thinking from architecture, engineering, planning, interiors, landscape design, and policy.

“Participating in LVI gave me back my leadership confidence that I had lost somewhere along the way. It was a great reminder of what I am capable of and provided me with tools to strengthen my skills as I move forward in new roles. Because of LVI, I took chances that I never would have taken just a few years ago and they paid off! I am so thankful for the community of support that LVI creates during the program and in the months and years afterwards."
