Building a Beacon of Sustainability: The Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre
The Clayoquot Biosphere Trust is building the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre, an innovative hub for environmental education and conservation. Nestled in the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Region, the centre will serve as a living laboratory, offering unparalleled opportunities for place based, cross disciplinary learning and be grounded in nuučaan̓uł (Nuu chah nulth) values and social equity.
This centre will bring people together for sustainable development, leveraging the region's rich ecological wisdom and cultural heritage. It will host programs and workshops aimed at promoting the health of individuals, communities, and ecosystems, underscoring the interconnectedness of human and environmental well being It will be a collaborative space to enhance our understanding of complex environmental issues and generate practical solutions for both local and global implementation.
The project has secured $9.6 million in funding toward its $ 15 million goal, with completion targeted for 2026.
In 2023, the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust provided over $500,000 in grants to 119 local projects, 47 organizations, and 31 individuals, along with distributing an additional $455,000 in community funds. One notable recipient is the Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating plastic pollution in the region.
Since 2016 the Surfrider Foundation has removed 70 000 plastic bottles from the shorelines of Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds! They’ve installed public refillable water dispensers in Tofino and Ucluelet and successfully advocated the municipality to pass a motion to ban single use plastic water bottles 1 liter and under. This motion is currently awaiting provincial approval, which, if granted, will make Tofino the first town in Canada to implement such a ban. Biodiversity conservation is most effective when we work in partnership towards common goals In the fall of 2023 the CBT facilitated the first regional forum bringing together over 65 individuals both virtually and in person. This initiative fostered meaningful connections, it was an opportunity for everyone to share insights, and cultivate strong relationships. The Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre will build on these local efforts to create a broader impact. By integrating local initiatives like the regional forum to bring people together to learn and share with each other, the centre aims to foster a model of environmental stewardship that can be replicated globally.
