Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre Art Program Coordinator
Temporary - as required for the CSBC project
Wage: S50.00/hour
Job Purpose
The construction of the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre creates an opportunity to exemplify the richness of the region’s cultures in a physical space, providing opportunities for all local artists to preserve culture and traditional knowledge, while creating accessible economic opportunities through art. The Art Program Coordinator engages community members and partners with the goal to plan, gather, and supervise the creation and installation of art in the future building in scale with available funding.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Works closely with CBT Executive Director and the design team to plan and implement the art program.
- Works closely with the Campaign and Donor Relations Lead to raise funds to support the art program. Collaborates with staff and engages with donors as a subject matter expert.
- Engage with the design and construction team to ensure that art is incorporated into the design and build process. Installation and mounting of significant pieces of art and sculpture, as well as consideration for the safety and security of the pieces will be incorporated into the pre-construction and construction process.
- Provide mindful guidance and careful mentorship for the art program across the region. Ensure Nuu-chah-nulth protocols are followed and sacred practices are respected for each Nation. For example, visiting each community in person to seek input and involvement is an opportunity to honour our partners and show appropriate respect.
- Champion equity for emerging artists, youth, and local experts throughout the region in the process of procuring art.
- Recruit and host a diverse and experienced jury to provide artistic guidance and mentorship utilizing the CARFAC guidelines. Cultivate a safe and inclusive program for artists to share knowledge and culture through their artistic practices. Our vision is to adopt a community-development approach to art acquisition.
- Coordinate a collective piece made by artists representing all Nations and communities in the Biosphere Region.
- Design and coordinate a process for commissioning art for specific locations within the centre including signage, sculptural pieces, welcome figures and other site-specific art.
- Provide input on the opportunities for rotating displays for local artists within the building.
- Coordinate preparation of CBT’s existing art pieces to be incorporated into the Biosphere Centre.
- Attend and network at community events as appropriate.
