What role do Indigenous communities play in this project?

Indigenous partnership is foundational to both the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre and the broader work of the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust. The region is home to five Nuu-chah-nulth Nations Hesquiaht, Ahousaht, Tla-o-qui-aht, Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ, and Toquaht, whose stewardship, cultural knowledge, and leadership are deeply connected to this place and vital to the future of the region. Approximately 31% of people living in this region identify as Indigenous, making Indigenous partnership and representation essential to meaningful regional development and decision-making.

The Clayoquot Biosphere Trust operates through a unique governance model with equal representation from First Nations and local governments. That governance structure fundamentally shapes how projects are developed, how decisions are made, and how community priorities are identified.

The Biosphere Centre itself has been shaped through years of collaboration, guidance, and relationship-building with Indigenous communities and leaders across the region. Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural priorities, language, art, intergenerational learning, tourism experiences, and community wellbeing are foundational elements of the project, embedded throughout the vision and programming of the Centre.

At its core, the project reflects a shared understanding that the region’s long-term resilience  depends on Indigenous leadership, partnership, and cultural continuity being central to its future.
