Won’t projects like the Biosphere Centre simply contribute to overtourism?

The Biosphere Centre is designed to help communities manage tourism growth more thoughtfully and sustainably, not simply increase visitor volume.

The conversation today is less about attracting more people during peak season and more about how municipalities like Tofino can distribute economic the benefits of tourism more evenly throughout the year while strengthening local infrastructure and community wellbeing.

The Centre supports that shift by creating year-round educational, cultural, and community programming that helps diversify the local economy beyond traditional seasonal tourism patterns. It encourages longer stays, deeper engagement, learning-based travel, and Indigenous-led experiences rather than simply increasing short-term visitation pressure.

Importantly, the Centre also invests directly in the systems that support healthy communities, such as workforce development, food security, shared community infrastructure, cultural programming, research, and resilience planning. Those are exactly the kinds of investments needed for tourism regions to remain livable and sustainable long term.

In many ways, the Biosphere Centre represents a more sustainable model of tourism development: one where visitor economies actively contribute to community resilience, environmental stewardship, and local quality of life.
