What are the main factors driving the project cost?

The total project budget is approximately $21.5 million, with construction accounting for approximately $16 million. The remaining budget covers land acquisition, architectural and engineering design, environmental studies, permitting, legal fees, project management, exhibits, furnishings, and contingency required to deliver a fully operational community facility. Approximately 8% of the construction budget is contingency to manage inflation and unforeseen construction costs.

Building in a remote coastal community also comes with additional costs. Many materials and skilled trades must be brought into the region, and the Centre has been designed to meet the Zero Carbon Building Standard and Living Building Challenge framework, incorporating high-performance building systems, sustainable materials, and universal accessibility features that will serve the region for generations.

The reality is that rural regions often struggle to access the same level of infrastructure investment as urban centres, despite supporting major tourism economies and contributing significantly to the provincial economy. The Biosphere Centre is an investment in regional infrastructure that will strengthen education, research, culture, community wellbeing, and sustainable economic development for decades to come.

More than $12.7 million has already been secured from government and philanthropic partners, reflecting strong confidence in both the project and its long-term impact.
